imperfectscientist | Experiment 1 [video]

[The man that appears on the screen is dark-skinned with thick hair, touched by gray at the temples. He’s currently looking at the screen with a quizzical brow.]

Hello? I’ve not seen a device quite like this one before, but I think this is some sort of communication system. If I’ve managed to reach anyone, um, hello! My name is Carlos, Carlos the scientist! [He smiles wide, revealing straight rows of white teeth.] Last I checked I had just become trapped in another world….but this is decidedly not the world I was trapped in, so I’m not quite certain what happened. There’s any number of things that could have happened, of course, scientifically speaking, but unfortunately, I’m rather limited in my means of collecting data, since I don’t seem to have any of my instruments with me. [He turns out the pockets of the labcoat he’s wearing, revealing only some lavender-flavored gum and a pocket notebook.] So, I’ll continue to investigate as much as I can, but if anyone has any scientific instruments I can make use of or some information for me, that would be really helpful!

In any case, I do know that I’m not alone in this world, since I encountered a woman who was very confused and thought I was her son. I can’t seem to get back into the house to ask her any questions though, which is a shame. Maybe that house is this world’s version of the House that Does Not Exist?

I’ve also discovered this very interesting fauna which seems to have taken a liking to me! [He pans the camera over to show an image of a Mareep who has lain down quite contentedly next to Carlos’ feet.] Oh, if only I had my instruments, but it seems he’s some sort of natural conductor of electricity! It’s extremely scientifically fascinating! I’m calling him Tesla. [Tesla bleats happily from Carlos' feet.] He is so cool!

[Carlos moves the screen to face him again.] Oh geez, I was rambling again, wasn't it? There’s just so much to see and I’d really like to explore! But there’s something important I have to say first.

I’m trying to get back to a place called Night Vale. There’s someone really important there and I promised I’d get back to him. …And now I seem to have lost my only means of contacting him, that is, my cell phone. [At least, he hadn’t found his cell phone when he turned out his lab coat.] On the off chance that anyone knows how to get back to Night Vale or has even heard of it, please, let me know. In the meantime, if anyone has need of a scientist, or has some interesting scientific phenomena to report, I’m your scientist!

_{[Oh. Molly's quiet for a long moment after having watched his recording, but then she suddenly, very quickly, presses the button to connect to the feed and record her response.]

[Have a wide-eyed little kid, Carlos.]}

You're a scientist?

What kind of scientist?

[Carlos has a soft spot for kids especially what with the kids in Night Vale being way more competent than he could ever hope to be. He greets the young girl wth a smile and a wave.]

Hi there! Yes, I am a scientist! And I do all sorts of science. About as much science as I ppossibly can, really. Are you interested in science?

_{[She gives him a cautious smile back.]}

A little.

Someone I know does science. He's a geneticist.

Oh yeah? [She knows a fellow scientist huh? Well, he'd sure like to meet him. Just think of all the data they could share, especially about a place like this!] He must be very smart then.

_{[She nods, getting a little more animated but keeping her eyes very firmly on this guy's face. He looks so similar to Mohinder and yet not really.]}

Yeah. I had a virus and he found the cure when nobody else could.

That's incredible! You're very lucky to know him. He must have worked very hard.

_{[She nods again, is quiet for a short moment.]}

You're kind of like him. He talked a lot, too.

Do I? Well then, I'm honored! [Wait. Oops that second bit. Dang it he's forgotten to ask for her name.]

Oh, I don't mean to talk so much if you don't want me to. I'd love to hear a little about you, if you'd like to talk about yourself instead.

_{[She hardly seems troubled, really.]} It's okay. I'm used to it.

_{[And, in fact, doesn't mind it.]}

What's your name? I'm Molly.

[That hardly makes him feel better.]

Hello, Molly. I'm Carlos. It's good to meet you. How long have you been here?

You too.

Since ... just before Christmas.

You've been here for quite some time then. How do you like it here? [He hopes she's staying safe. He hasn't run into any trouble here besides a certain group of employees he knows, but he's sure this world has it's dangers and he's not sure where Molly is by herself or knows anyone from her own world.]

It's okay. I made friends and the pokémon are cool.

_{[She's still unsure about a few things, but on the whole, she looks sincere enough in saying that.]}

That's great! What sort of Pokemon do you have? [He's still very curious at the Pokemon thing. He turns the camera to show her his own Pokemon, a Mareep who is currently curled up quite contentedly at Carlos' feet.] This is mine. His name is Tesla.

_{[She can't help a smile at the Mareep. Cause that's really cute.]}

I have two birds, and two kind of ferrets, and a dog. And an egg. _{[She looks off screen for a moment and whistles, and then smiles some more when moments later she picks up a Natu to show him.]}

This is Aria, she was my first one.

She's beautiful! [Carlos smiles at the Pokemon over the screen. His Mareep looks up at Molly's whistle and bleats when the Natu comes onto the screen. Hey, a friend!] Aria, huh? Like the musical term?

_{[Aria gives a quiet little chirp right back, shifting her wings. Molly nods.]}

Yeah. I thought maybe she'll sing. But she doesn't really yet.

That's too bad. Maybe she'll pick it up soon. [Carlos smiles.] Have you tried singing to her?

... no.

_{[But that IS an idea.]}

I whistle to her though.

You do? That's sweet of you. I'm sure she likes listening to you whistle? Has she picked that up yet?

Sometimes. She's kind of shy, so she doesn't talk a lot anyway, but she listens when I do. And she sometimes whistles back.

Aww, she's shy, is she? Maybe that's why she hasn't started singing yet. Maybe as you get to know and trust each other better, she'll start.

I hope so. I think it'd be pretty.

_{[She smiles a little.]}

What's your sheep like?

I'm sure it will be! She's a really pretty Pokemon, so it would make sense.

Oh, Tesla? Well, I'm still getting to know him. Mostly he likes to stay close to me. He's pretty relaxed. Although I did have to make sure he knew not to electrocute me by accident. I guess he didn't realize I was susceptible to that sort of thing.
