[The man that appears on the screen is dark-skinned with thick hair, touched by gray at the temples. He’s currently looking at the screen with a quizzical brow.]

Hello? I’ve not seen a device quite like this one before, but I think this is some sort of communication system. If I’ve managed to reach anyone, um, hello! My name is Carlos, Carlos the scientist! [He smiles wide, revealing straight rows of white teeth.] Last I checked I had just become trapped in another world….but this is decidedly not the world I was trapped in, so I’m not quite certain what happened. There’s any number of things that could have happened, of course, scientifically speaking, but unfortunately, I’m rather limited in my means of collecting data, since I don’t seem to have any of my instruments with me. [He turns out the pockets of the labcoat he’s wearing, revealing only some lavender-flavored gum and a pocket notebook.] So, I’ll continue to investigate as much as I can, but if anyone has any scientific instruments I can make use of or some information for me, that would be really helpful!

In any case, I do know that I’m not alone in this world, since I encountered a woman who was very confused and thought I was her son. I can’t seem to get back into the house to ask her any questions though, which is a shame. Maybe that house is this world’s version of the House that Does Not Exist?

I’ve also discovered this very interesting fauna which seems to have taken a liking to me! [He pans the camera over to show an image of a Mareep who has lain down quite contentedly next to Carlos’ feet.] Oh, if only I had my instruments, but it seems he’s some sort of natural conductor of electricity! It’s extremely scientifically fascinating! I’m calling him Tesla. [Tesla bleats happily from Carlos' feet.] He is so cool!

[Carlos moves the screen to face him again.] Oh geez, I was rambling again, wasn't it? There’s just so much to see and I’d really like to explore! But there’s something important I have to say first.

I’m trying to get back to a place called Night Vale. There’s someone really important there and I promised I’d get back to him. …And now I seem to have lost my only means of contacting him, that is, my cell phone. [At least, he hadn’t found his cell phone when he turned out his lab coat.] On the off chance that anyone knows how to get back to Night Vale or has even heard of it, please, let me know. In the meantime, if anyone has need of a scientist, or has some interesting scientific phenomena to report, I’m your scientist!

...You got trapped in another world? I mean, another world that's not this one, another world.

Ah, hello! Yes, just before I arrived here, actually. I've been referring to it as the Desert Other World, though I'm not sure if it has a proper name. I thought I was going to be trapped there for a long time, since the door that I went through to get there had closed and disappeared, but now it looks like somehow I managed to come here! I'm not quite sure how I managed it though. I can't remember finding any sort of door...

Whoa.

[Because really, what else do you say to something like that.]

I don't think you went through any door this time. People just kind of — ptchoo! And then show up here.

Neat, huh? I think so. I mean being trapped there wasn't very neat. I kind of promised someone close to me I was on my way back... [His face falls a little. He really hopes Cecil isn't too worried.]

Um. Ptchoo? Can you give me a more scientific term?

[Oh, lord, Carlos, you have no idea the can of worms you have just opened with that one.]

...Okay, I don't actually remember if I heard a noise when I showed up but I definitely remember the other portal thing that everybody ptchoo'd through a couple months ago and that was definitely a ptchoo, or maybe kind of a fffphwoop.

Is fffphwoop scientific?

...Well, uh, not exactly but it's certainly an interesting piece of data? [Better than nothing, at least.] Tell me more about this portal a couple of months ago. Can you describe it? Was it a certain color? What size was it? You said people went through it, but did anything come out?

It was kind of wooshy and I guess sort of clear and shimmery white? And person-sized, definitely person-sized. I think they were only one-way, though, because nothing came out; we were just supposed to go through them.

Kind of like teleporting with a Pokemon except more portal-y, and just to get us all to go up into the mountains.

[He's grabbed his notepad, and is taking rapid notes on what she's been saying.] This is all really fascinating! How did you know you were supposed to go through them? And what do you mean by "teleporting with a Pokemon?"

The llama god said we were supposed to. At least I think it was the llama god.

[DAMMIT PARKER.]

...Wait, you're — oops. Um. Okay, the sheep you got? That's a Pokemon. Like...all the little animals all around, they're Pokemon. Bird Pokemon and sheep Pokemon and cow Pokemon and dog Pokemon and frog Pokemon and glittery rock beast Pokemon and...stuff.

Some of them can teleport. It's weird.

The. The llama god. [He's seen some very strange things, he reminds himself. Surely, a lllama god is a thing. It seems fairly Night Vale-esque, actually.] Was he the one that created the portal?

Oh! So these creatures are called Pokemon, huh? Fascinating! [More note taking. This is so cool.] How can you tell which ones can teleport?

They can learn it! Did you find your Dex yet? It's on the thing we're talking on.

Look in the menu and find the thing that says Dex, then point it at your sheep and click.

They can learn it? [Wow, apparently Tesla is much more intelligent than Carlos was giving him credit for. He eagerly follows the instructions. The pokedex tells him that the subspecies of Pokemon that Tesla apparently belongs to as well as some brief information about him. Guess that's one scientific question answered!] Wow! And this dex works for all types of Pokemon?

Yup! Just point and shoot. Or click. I mean don't shoot, but click.

...You're in New Bark Town, right? There's some other ones on the route outside of town. Route 29.

Got it.

Routes, huh? I'll check it out! I'm really looking forward to exploring this place. [And also getting as far away from New Back and Lauren as he possibly can.] Where will Route 29 lead me?

West. It goes west to Cherrygrove City.

[There's a brief pause, like she's calling up a memory, and then her words get a lot more rapid and practiced, like she's reciting something.]

Three days on foot to Cherrygrove City, where there's a Pokemon Center but no gym, also an inn, west through the woods on Route 29. But there's also a ferry down by the docks, that goes to Pallet Town. That's the other region, and that takes three days, too, but it costs money to get there and I don't think you have a lot right now.

[He takes all the information down faithfully.] Thank you! I really appreciate your help with all this. Hmm. I think Route 29 is probably my best option considering I don't seem to have much of anything on me, at the moment, so I almost certainly don't have enough money for a ferry.

There sure is a lot to know around here! Have you been here a long time? ....Oh. Oh geez, I am really sorry, I never even asked your name! I'm sorry it's just that you were saying some really scientifically interesting things and I got carried away....

...I guess you really like science, huh.

....Science? That's why I'm a scientist. [He's kind of looking at her like she's dumb. Scientists do science, duh.]

...So you do every kind of science?

Well, yes! I'm not a botanist or a dendrologist, but those aren't really scientists anyway.
